The Sagehen Herbarium contains a collection for the North Fork of the American River. You can access the digital files through the North American Network of Small Herbaria (NANSH). Here’s how:
- Deselect all check boxes, then select the “Sagehen Herbarium (SCFS)” collection under NANSH;
- Click the “Search >” button;
- In the Advanced Search page that opens, type “Placer” into the county field. This will filter all Sagehen Herbarium records for the North Fork.
- Click the “List Display” or “Table Display” button, as you prefer.
Most North Fork vouchers in the Sagehen Herbarium have a live observation associated with the record. You can see those observations here.

Sherman Chickering collected some of the first botanical records in the North Fork. These records were used by Palmer, et al to produce the basin’s first published plant list. Find the current North Fork species lists here.
Sagehen’s Collections Manager, Erica Krimmel, scanned Chickering’s botanical binders in 2012; the images and the original basin plant list are available here.
